{{tag>long_term_view}} {{page>nav:top_navs#my_experience}} =====Milky tea===== I was standing behind in a man in the queue to buy a cup of tea at a railway station. The man ahead of me ordered a cup of tea with milk. The woman serving put a teabag into a cup, filled it with water from a hot water boiler, put some milk in and placed the cup on the counter. The man pointed out that as the milk had been put in immediately he would get a milky cup of tea, which he didn't like. He asked if he could have another one without the milk being put in. The woman said that she was not allowed to do that without charging for it. The man became frustrated, the conversation quickly went downhill and resulted in the man saying he would make a complaint and the woman saying he could please himself. I was next and wanting a non milky tea made sure that the milk was not out in until the tea had brewed for while. At a Difficult Conversations workshop, I used this example to rehearse how I might have tackled the situation, playing the man's role. Although we managed to get through the conversation a bit better than the real life situation, I wasn't confident it would be an easy situation to tackle, especially if there was a queue of people who all needed to catch a train. After further reflection, I concluded that taking a long term view having a cup of milky tea was not important and the conversation not worth having. Although I always make sure I know when the milk is going into the teacup!
